Introduction

Battle Of Phantasia is a multi-player Dungeons & Dragons style role playing game which allows players to create characters and explore the realm and fight any evil you may encounter. Characters progress through experience from fighting monsters (and other players) as well as attaining positions of power.

There are many goals to accomplish in the realm. Here are some of the more popular ones:

Be All You Can Be

- Fight the evil monsters that wander the realm, stockpile their treasure, purchase better equipment and increase in levels.

Find the Treasure Trove

- A treasure is hidden close to the origin. The player to find it is rewarded with gems and a blessing.

Defeat the Dark Lord

- The Dark Lord is the most powerful monster in the game and can only be overthrown with a blessing and charms. When this beast falls, you know all other monsters tremble at your might.

Kill Your Fellow Man

- Has the king been causing you problems? Does another player just not deserve to live? Take matters into your own hands by entering inter-terminal combat and make them pay.

Take Steward Responsibilities

- If you find a staff, you can become steward at The Lord's Chamber as long as no king exists. Stewards can collect taxes and distribute wealth so it is a highly valued position.

Become King or Queen of the Realm

- You can become king or queen by entering The Lord's Chamber with a crown. This position has powers second only to the valar, is immune from dying, and can appoint a knight.

Enter The Council of the Wise

- Upon reaching level 3000, characters become a member of The Council of the Wise. These characters gain two lives and have powers that can affect other players and aid in the search for the Holy Grail.

Attain the Position of Valar

- Valar is the ultimate position of the game. In addition to three extra lives, this character can greatly aid certain players in the realm or smite them all.

If this is your first visit through the rules, I recommend using the "Next" buttons at the bottom of each page to introduce game aspects in an orderly fashion. If instead you're looking for specific information, keywords will link to sections that explain themselves, or use this list of rule pages.

The Phantasia Realm

The realm is a massive cartesian system and all objects reside at some point on this plane. Certain regions of the playing grid have different names. In general, this is only to give the player some idea of his/her present location. Some special places do exist.

Circles
- The realm is broken up in circles, each one with an increasing radius of 125 from the origin. For example, if you're standing on (0, 200), you are said to be in circle 2. This distinction is made because a monster's size is equal to the circle it was encountered in.

Trading Posts
- These are located at certain coordinates. In order to find a post, take any number and multiply it to itself, then multiply it by 100. A post will be at that coordinate number. For example: 1*1*100 = 100, so a post is at (+/- 100, +/- 100). 2*2*100 = 400, so another post is at (+/- 400, +/- 400). Then there are posts at 900, 1600, 2500 ... Trading posts sell equipment for large quantities of gems and gold. Farther out posts have more things for sale. Be careful about cheating the merchants, as they have short tempers. Merchants are dishonest about 2% of the time.

Lord's Chamber
- This is located at the origin (0,0). Players with staves and crowns may enter, possibly after a bloody coup.

MiAnus

- This is a large square around the origin. Any time one of your coordinates is equal or greater than 1,000,000, you are beyond this point of no return. The only way to return is via Gwaihir.

Dead Marshes

- This is a band located fairly distant from the origin. The first sixteen monsters (water monsters) can normally only be found here and movement slows to a crawl. Teleportation spells do not work for locations inside the Marshes.

Plateau of Gorgoroth

- This is surrounded by the Dead Marshes and cannot be reached by teleport. The monsters here are extremely tough and improve as the player improves. Players are warned not to spend too much time in here unless they enjoy a significant risk of death! However, the post in the Plateau is the only post in the game that sells blessings....

Cracks of Doom

- This is surrounded by the Plateau of Gorgoroth and cannot be reached by teleport. The monsters here are even tougher than on the Plateau and improve as the player improves. Players are warned not to spend too much time in here unless they enjoy a significant risk of death! However, the Cracks are the only place in the Realm where Rings of Power can be destroyed, a feat necessary to receive a crown.

The Edge of the World

- It is rumored to be out there somewhere, but no one is known to have returned after seeing it.

Character Statistics

A phantasia character's abilities are determined by his/her statictics. These attributes change as a player ages or goes up in levels and can be enhanced with equipment found as treasure or bought at trading posts.
Here's a list of Phantasia's basic character statistics.
strength - determines how much damage a character will inflict with melee or skirmish.
quickness - a higher quickness gives you better chance of winning initiative in combat. Quickness can drop when too much gold is carried or when the character gets tired from too much fighting without rest.
energy level - specifies how much damage a character may endure before dying.
magic level - determines which spells a character may throw, and how effective those spells will be.
brains - basically, the character's intelligence; used to calculate the sucess of luckout.
experience - experience is directly connected to levels. It is gained by fighting monsters and other characters.
level - a general rating of a character. Each time a character goes up a level, most other stats are improved.
poison - sickness which degrades a character's performance (affects energy level and strength).
sin - accumulated as a character does certain nasty things. Players with high sin tend to be shunned by helpful creatures.
age of player - roughly equivalent to number of turns. As age increases, many personal statistics degenerate.

Character Creation

Phantasia characters have only one chance in life. Although your character is saved in a common file when you leave the game via the quit button, it is removed when restored with the proper password, and can not be re-restored if the character dies. In addition, the save file is frequently purged of inactive characters.
When the client and the server disconnect, the game saves your characters as soon as possible. If you are in combat, your character will leave when you get a chance to attack and a fresh monster will be summoned upon return. If you return to find your character gone, then you had no chances to attack. In a battle with another player, the game will try to evade until you are free of the battle or dead.
All phantasia characters have a distinctive class. In addition to attributes, this character class also determines how much gold a player may carry, how long until rings can overcome the player, and how much mana the character can have. The current classes are:
magic user - strong in magic level and brains, weak in other areas. Must rely on wits and magic to survive.
fighter - good in strength and speed. This adds up to a character well-equipped to fight but poor in magic and brains.
elf - very high quickness and above average magic level are elves selling points. Although weak in energy, elves are immune to the plague.
dwarf - very high energy level and strength, but with a tendency to be extremely slow and not too bright. The tank of characters, dwarves regenerate energy at a slightly faster rate than any other class.
halfling - very smart backed up with good combat abilities, but poor in magic. The halfling excels through the use of luckout and tends to lead a charmed life when it comes to deflecting special attacks. Born with some experience.
experimento - mediocre in all areas. However, the experimento may begin the game placed almost anywhere within 2000 distance of the origin and uses the fewest charms to block special attacks.
giants - are the strong players. They are big and strong but slow and stupid.
Each character class starts off with base statistics. These attributes are rolled randomly from the following list:
